Players each bring a song and play it out loud. The group decides on a song together and that is the show’s theme song, the brainstorming for the show launches from there.
Shows with solid thematic songs:
The Wire, The Sopranos, Firefly, The Unit
I might just do this at Dreamation. We’ll see.
Sadly in the most recent season they changed the theme song to the Unit to something that’s just so much weaker than the original. Very, very annoying.

You mentioned that in your livejournal that made me take even more notice of the theme song as I’ve watched the first season and made my way through the second.

There’s a fair number of theme songs on older shows, where the songs explain the premise of the show, often quite succinctly … Johnny Rivers singing Secret Agent Man, or The Jeffersons, heck, even Gilligan’s Island!
Doug.

Oooohhh…I like. And you forgot Rome.

The theme song was absolute vital to our PTA game. We’d do the teaser scene to establish what the episode was going to be about, and then roll the opening credits.
After the last episode of the season, we played the song in its entirety.

Excellent idea! Hope it works out well.

I’ve done this more than a couple of times. Remember Life on Mars? That had the theme song . . . Life on Mars
.
Anyway, I think it could very strong and fun. Creative constraints baby.
PS: The Unit. Bleh.
Yeah, the Unit is inconsistent, without a doubt.

They’ve been playing the original “Batman” and “Superman” animated series on cable lately. They both had some pretty solid theme music.
I seem to recall that Battlestar Galactica had a good theme as well (both new and old versions, actually).
And, of course, my current ringtone is the A-Team theme song, so that’s probably worth a mention.

How about something like saying, “Think ‘the court of Louis XIV’” before playing The Sex Pistols. Sort of, the words define the setting and the music defines the theme.
