“Conan, what is best in life?”

A new movie?

A new franchise?

Aiming for an R rating?

“The story opens on the battlefield where Conan is born and tells the origin story that sets the stage for what will be the first of multiple films,” Lerner said. “This is a coup for Millennium Films and proves that our choice of projects and material is attracting much higher-profile directors and actors.”

Interesting.

  1. Hmmm. . . as much as I like the idea of someone trying to tackle Conan (despite my perverse love of Conan the Destroyer), Ratner is an awful choice. He is a horrific director who has made a string of nigh-unwatchable movies. And the origin story really needs to be told in flashback, in juxtapostion with the barbarian doing some serious Conaning!

  4. Oo! Oo! I want it to be *really clear* how irredeemably evil black people are! That would be awesome!

OK, even ignoring that, the movies should follow dramatic necessity rather than chronology. I really enjoyed the hints about Conan’s past, that were filled in later with stories about his past that foreshadow his future.

Still, the dude was racist and misogynistic in the obvious extreme and that attitude saturates the writing. Just as Beowulf can’t be told now without the addition of women and a questioning of Christianity, Conan can’t be told without addressing racism, misogyny, and the ugliness of intitutional violence.

  7. No comment on the movie, but I found out a couple days ago that Obama collects Conan the Barbarian (& Spider-Man) comics and was tickled about it all afternoon.

I’ve been collecting Conan comics and mags since ’78 and have just about everything that’s ever come out for him.

Conan is just about the last thing I would have guessed I had in common with the President Elect.

Loving the new Solomon Kane. Not so sure on Kull yet – need more to decide.
