Just about Friday already

Reading: I finished up In the Stacks by Scott Lynch, a short story in the swords & sorcery short story collection that was loaned to me by Jim, a fellow librarian (though Jim is fully blooded by the books, having earned his librarian’s gladius in the Salt City). I really liked it, turning a magical library into a proper dungeon-crawl.

Planning: Getting through the rest of this year is about it for now.

Writing: Tinkering with a sci-fi AW hack over yonder. I love the term, Archivist-Errant.

And you?

  1. Reading: Finished Charles Yu’s *How To Live Safely In a Science-Fictional Universe* and am not sure if it is brilliant or whacked. Read a couple of stories in the *Haunted Legends* anthology, one of which was great (Carrie Laben’s “Face Like a Monkey”). I am reading James Enge’s *Blood of Ambrose*and it is danged good. I discovered him through the anthology that Judd mentions; solid S&S with a classical edge.

Planning: Gearing up for NaNoWriMo, tweaking some stuff for a possible D&D campaign, reading about potty training since the little one is taking an interest in the toilet as something other than a place to drop her toys and watch them float.

Writing: Background for my NaNoWriMo, tentatively titled *A Crown of Crusted Blood.* Playing with two short stories, one a steampunkish tale set in India at the turn of the 20th century, the other a very sad zombie story.

  2. That Archivist-Errant concept is great. Feels like a mashup of AW and Diaspora. For some reason it reminds me of the opening chapter in a really cool Steve Jackson single-player gamebook. It just feels like a solo game, or solo-with-GM-as-book game. In any case, looking forward to seeing how it develops.

Reading: Halfway through ‘Palimpsest’, which can probably be best described as ‘fantasy-era Clive Barker (think Weaveworld or Imagica) meets China Mieville…in the ink and stationery section of Barnes and Noble’. Beautifully written.

Planning: Taking the princess trick-or-treating. Finishing up on binding a new sketchbook in preparation for…

Drawing: November is NaNoDrawMo – 50 drawings in 30 days. I’ve done something similar for the last couple years, but it was always ‘a drawing a day’. This will be different somehow. Looking forward to it.

  3. Reading: After finishing a couple of manga and the Keys of the Kingdom series (Garth Nix), I went briefly back to Thomas Ligotti’s Songs of a Dead Dreamer, an anthology which is well written, but not entirely satisfying to me. Still, it was one of the recommended books for getting into the mood for Chaosium’s Tatters of the King, and I just ran the first session of that.

Planning: Going to a Halloween party on Sunday, UberCon next week, job hunting, working on trying to get details of my parents’ estates to the respective lawyers and all the associated loose ends gradually dealt with, cleaning the apartment.

Writing: Just finished a blog post for Yog-Sothoth on the first session of Tatters. Stopped bouncing off the walls and am trying to recalibrate, as I normally do between sessions, and figure out how best to use the rope that one player gave me to hang his PC with, and into whose noose two of the other three players stuck their PCs’ heads. It needs to be done right and proper.
