Cool Summer Friday

Reading: Almost 400 pages into A Dance with Dragons.  I’m digging it but reading it has brought out some problems I find with GRRM’s writing.  I’ll write a review of the book once I’m done this weekend.

Planning: After the fun, rewarding but hectic travel of the past week, I’m going to take it easy this weekend, hit the Saturday crossfit work-out, do some job searching and laundry.

Writing: Cover letters.  Ugh.

And you?

  1. READING: Carnage and Culture, a military history book about how the West’s cultural values have affected its terrible effectiveness at bloodshed, from the Greco-Persian wars up to eve of 9/11. Interesting stuff.

Last week I finished Pride and Prejudice. Go figure.

PLANNING: Trip to Knoebels olde-time amusement park this weekend. And Game Chef Shakespeare.

WRITING: 750 words everyday. Stockpiling some blog posts for a relaunch. Did i mention Shakespeare?

Good luck with the cover letters!

  2. Reading: Just finished Lev Grossman’s “The Magicians”, which wasn’t as good as I had been led to believe, and am slowly working my way through “Python for Bioinformatics”, which is exactly as punchy and exciting as it sounds. I’ve been listening to a lot of short stories in podcast form, though, so that’s been good.

Planning: A relatively slow day in the lab, then jiu-jitsu class. Elizabeth and I are going to the Shadow Art Fair in Yspilanti tomorrow, and then to a pool party at which I have been roped into playing the banjo in public for the first time in many years.

Writing: Poking away at the manuscript, but I don’t have all the data yet, so it’s not really moving very fast.

Good luck on the job hunt!

  3. Reading: Nothing right now. This week has been stupid stressful and my brain is fried.
Planning: Playing in an Apocalypse World campaign. Putting together stuff to run a 4E game in the future. Laundry. Rest.
Writing: 4E monsters. I’ve really learned a lot about how information flows in crunchy games! I’m starting to develop a proto-theory on why some crunchy games are easier to manage than others, and it deals with how many things you have to have in your head at any -given- step in a process, and how well a game breaks down those steps.

  4. Reading: Splitting my time between Alarums & Excursions #430 and Bookhounds of London.

Writing: My zine for Alarums & Excursions #429 (and hoping that Lee Gold will be sufficiently recovered from cataract surgery by then, and have her vision restored to the specifications she gave all the doctors).

Planning: A bit more post-fire clean up before getting in a cleaning service (there was a fire in our building while we were in another state; damage mostly limited to kitchen. Gaming materials, books, music, clothing — all fine. But we do need a service that specializes in post-fire clean up. We can totally live with that.) Doing what I can to tie off loose ends on my father’s estate so we can move on from that to my mother’s estate. Confluence from next Thursday through Sunday, where we have a concert next Saturday. Rehearsal for concert. Not bouncing off too many walls or trying to convince Josh that things which really can wait can’t. Breathing. Achieving inner peace.
