Illithid Empire

A mind flayer prepares his next meal while casually tossing aside the victim’s helmet.  (Roger Raupp illustration from the article “The ecology of the mind flayer”, written by Roger Moore, Dragon #73, October 1983, TSR.) “Where do the Illithids, whom men call the mind flayers, come from?” asked the mage in a trembling voice. I believe this article is the first appearance of the name “Illithid” in print.:
